Where Else Is It Safe?

With the gripping news about the bombing of Batasang Pambansa, my brain waves transmitted a question – Where else is it safe?

It is ambiguous that a building supposedly protected by a more (if not the most) sophisticated and tight security measure can be blown up just like that. Well, the government and some personalities can always throw warnings against speculations but can we blame anybody who wonders? Why are these bombings happening?

I am still filled with shock seeing those people who died and were hurt in the incident. Whoever did these merciless and vindictive acts are unforgivable. No reason is reason enough to bomb a building where innocent victims could be hurt or could die. It will require calloused hearts to plan and even execute those acts of terror.

Just like most everybody else, we cannot help but feel fear. We cannot help entertain thoughts of possibilities. Are these bombings mere coincidences? Or are these deliberate heinous acts of covering up issues? Or are these sadistic acts of terrorism? Opinions, I believe, based on incomplete information and evidence are inessential until proven but they should not be ruled out.

The death of Rep. Akbar is a tragic one and is pivotal. Media interviews imply that he has been a target of the military because of his previous connections to the MILF. A friend of his contends that he is a good man and a competent congressman. There are speculations that the military is getting back at him. While these are happening, the Abu Sayyaf group denied involvement in the incident because they have no reason to exterminate the congressman. And just this evening, there was a text message from someone who claims the bombing and that he is an ASG member. We are again left with a question – who is telling the truth?

I remember Gary Valenciano in an interview long ago, when his kids were still very young, that he is afraid not for himself alone that for his kids. I feel this exact feeling of anxiety these days where you always think about the safety of your kids.

So where else is it safe? If an institution like the Batasang Pambansa can be penetrated by vicious elements, how can we feel safe? I could speculate all the more but I don’t want to further overstretch the issues connected with this bombing. But I cannot help thinking about people who are possibly blinded by power and could design such evil schemes notwithstanding the dangers they could inflict on innocent victims. Gruesome.

  3. Hatred; that could be the cause of everything. Or greed. So many themes to explore and we don’t know what is actually going on in the back of the minds of those people who planned such acts. It’s horrible, really.

    The world isn’t a safe place anymore. We hear such news everyday; political conflicts, bombings, terrorism, et cetera. I wonder how long will all of us withstand these.

    May God protect all of us especially the innocent ones through and through.

  6. it’s pretty scary to think that if you wanted someone killed, you could do it using a bomb detonated by remote control. But then again, assassinations are nothing new. they’ve been happening since the dawn of time and they occur anywhere, basically wherever there are humans. that’s probably why hitmen will never go out of business. So regarding your question “where else is it safe?”, my answer is nowhere.

    That’s such a negative way of thinking it..

    Humans are born inherently unaware of what is good and evil.. it is what we are exposed to later that causes us to be biased on each side (be it evil or good)..

    Like for example your statement which denotes just which side youre on right now after growing up..

  8. hi, verns. i believe it is greed that causes these things. the love of money and power blind some people and make them do things that are unimaginable.

    and even if i wanted to leave and bring my family with me, single, i cannot do it because i cannot afford it. freedom is so costly.

    may God protect those who believe in His power, kyels. and i hope and pray for a change of heart for everybody.

    that is one inspiring verse, tk. in times like this, we dont need mentos but God’s protective love. 🙂

    hi, nico. i agree that death is inevitable but i also believe that God can protect us from such gruesome incidents. while we could have acquired the sinful nature, i cling to my belief that we have or we were given the choice or the freedom to do what is right.

    hey, wil. this is my take – there are still places that are safer. if the basis of saying this is the degree of chaos and the number of bombings and killings then probably there are places that are safer. the probability of being killed by bombings and by other gruesome means sooner or faster is lesser in these places.

    hi, colossus. welcome to my site and thank you for sharing your thought. your point says about the things that affect one’s beliefs and ways of thinking and i agree. but i believe, too, that abaniko is just expressing his thought on the matter and it does not tell that he is evil or to which he is inclined to by saying that humans are inherently evil. it maybe a loose statement but it’s just an expression.

  11. In that case, I would say then that the only safe places left (away from bombings and the like) are rural areas. Whether its Manila, or Italy or London or New York City or Spain, those who use bombs are always targeting infrastructure (malls, government buildings, the World Trade Center, subways, etc.) or people who work in those infrastructures.

  13. There is no “safe” place anymore. Whereas it was previously just disagreement, people these days appear to have intensified their feelings into hatred and no longer care how the others who are not even party to their disagreement are physically hurt or killed, just because they want to make a statement. The innocent are lost for words.

    Leaving the country is not the answer. There is no completely safe place. We are afraid of our own shadows through no fault of our own.

    Yes, our home is the safest place possible but even then it can never be 100% safe. It’s the place where we can exert our greatest influence and inculcate our values.

    Tolerance is a value that should be given the greatest emphasis in the curriculum of all the schools the world over.

  14. The problem with our domestic security personnel is that they only tighten guard whenever something like this happen. But now, such thing happens in the very seat of our legislature–where security should always be high-level at all times.

    hi, bayi. nice to read your thoughts again. home can never be 100% safe. there are even crimes held within the confines of the house. you know, news and all that tells a lot about men’s evil ways. but i could not agree more that it should be the place where values should be inculcated and where one individual should be trained especially about patience, understanding and tolerance. 🙂

    hi, major tom. true, true. approach is reactionary. very common to us all Filipinos only, you think? maybe not. but the trait is prevalent in us.
