Why Criticism is Necessary

Criticism (Photo credit: Celestine Chua)

While reading my FB friends’ posts which consist mostly of updates about super typhoon Yolanda, I noticed an update of a UP professor that I had been following, that says:

Because of my posts, many people are asking why am I criticizing the government when the priority is to help. We should never oppose assistance with critique. Our assistance should be compassion with justice. Without CNN Anderson Cooper’s criticism of relief operation, Korina Sanchez would have not gone to Tacloban; without the victims complaining themselves, the government would have continued its failed response, without the vigilance and criticism against government bureaucracy the relief good would have been hijacked and used for political purposes. And when we wait til the rehabilitation is over to voice out our criticisms, we will only get frustrated for the criminals had already fooled the people and entrenched themselves in their thrones. Help now, criticize later –the mantra of those in power.” – Gerry Lanuza

Most pro-PNoys, those who stood aloof because they have everything, and those who are wont to just keep silent even if a bad situation requires one to say something against, had also broken their silence by telling that what is needed from everyone else now is to help and not attack each other, not to wage war against our fellowmen, and not to berate the President and his officials.  Now that is some criticism, too, though some are unfounded, because we know for a fact that the sharpest criticisms come from those who are on the ground, and who had given a lot to help, and from those who had been trying hard to reach the afflicted in the quickest possible time.  But they help in ways making everybody be on guard of the words that come out – if they are already personal or ‘trollish’ and not constructive.

Criticisms connote the good and the bad but they are necessary.  If we go back to Prof. Lanuza’s post, it helps that there are people bold enough to say something about inconsistencies, irregularities, abnormalities, superficialities, impartialities, and all ‘ties and ‘ies that define evil in the midst of a tragedy such as this brought by the supertyphoon Yolanda.

I thought of expounding this but I just want to say it as simple as it is – criticisms are necessary, as Winston Churchill said:

Criticism may not be agreeable, but it is necessary. It fulfils the same function as pain in the human body. It calls attention to an unhealthy state of things.

HGH pills for the Supreme Court justices

It seems that the SC justices are in need of hgh pills because we know that human growth hormones or HGH drop quite rapidly when one grows old.  They say that some memory related disorders are associated with the lack of it.  Could this be the reason why the Supreme Court deliberately forgot what is in the 1987 Constitution that an outgoing president is barred from making appointments two months before an election and until the end of his or her term or simply, that she cannot appoint from March 10 to June 30?

I fear so much, I must admit,  to what is happening in our country.  Ordinary citizen Juan could not care less if Arroyo will appoint a SC chief of justice to replace Justice Reynato Puno who will retire on May 17.  What do all these controversial issues be of matter to an ordinary citizen – that the present president can name the next chief justice during the election appointment ban making it ‘a culpable violation of the constitution’?

But ordinary citizen Juan is not a simpleton if that is what the highly elite groups think.  He is aware of what is happening.  He knows the score.  He knows in simple thoughts that there attempts to fool everybody, to take advantage of what is perceived as ‘weak common people’, and to manipulate even further up to the last minute.  Thanks to the media people and avenues :-D.

I cannot wait for the elections to come although I know the posts will be relinquished involuntarily and reluctantly.

An insurance quote would be timely

Yes,  I say it is indeed timely to consider an insurance quote especially a life insurance quote.  Why?

Philippine news can kill you.  Let’s have a glimpse on some of the headlines in PhilNews.com:

  1. GMA to declare power crisis in Mindanao
  2. Crisis declared; Aboitiz, Alcantara power deals up
  3. Gordon says definitely not Angara but refuses to name emissary
  4. Palace has list of pols in drugs, says Sotto
  5. Edu denies he’s backing out of VP race

For number one headline, who would not be anxious of how the cost of such declaration will be spent?  The declaration would entail a power generation capacity build-up that would cost from 8 billion to 10 billion pesos.  The thought of how some crooks will be merry again upon gaining support from Congress is really bothersome.

For number two, the luminaries in this deal, the Aboitizes and Alcantaras, are known to be business associates of the President and her husband.  As an ordinary Pinoy, Juan will worry again how much money will be added to his electricity bill in the future if this deal becomes very expensive and will not compensate to the needs of the present crisis.

For number three headline, it is worrisome if someone who buys votes and candicacy will win.  It is very, very worrisome because a lot of Pinoys are uneducated and poor. It makes my head ache actually.

For number four headline, how would one ignore the US State Department’s concern that drug money will be used to influence the May 10 elections?  What is the government doing about this?

For the last headline in this list, Edu is giving the people a headache.  Where did that story come from – that he is backing out?  An adage describes it best – there is fire when there is smoke or anything to that effect.  The whole scene is so theatrical.

Do Not Underestimate Stupidity

What we have now is a confused citizenry. We, Filipinos, have a mind set that whoever is popular, or wealthy or wise should be the one to be entrusted the most sensitive positions in government. This with the many evidences of taking advantage of our own stupidity by undeserving people. We put people that has no clear platforms or programs that could elevate the country from the quagmire that it has been in for so many years.

We had put Gloria in her pedestal because of her wit. Because of her wit, we are now submersed more in deep trouble that includes debts, economic crisis, political arguments, and lack of many government services to the people. We had put Erap in the same pedestal because of his charm which was derived from being an actor. The ‘makamasa’ image is just an advertisement which many Filipinos hungrily bought. We had put Ramos (or did we?), too, because he is a strong man from the military who we thought could probably instill discipline and order in the country. We failed to realize that Ramos himself need disciplining. It was not only Gloria who traveled abroad and dined luxuriously. Fidel and Ming had probably done so many times and surreptitiously. Do we have to go back to the past to determine who among them robbed (not loved) their constituents the most?

I am sipping coffee now. I am thinking. Is there hope from the stupid decisions we made and will be making? Are we going to the same trend of voting for these traditional politicians? Well, all I can say is these politicians should not underestimate stupidity. As Buddha said, “If we could see the miracle of a single flower clearly, our whole life would change.” It is awareness that the Filipino people need.

Thinking about Safety

We think so much about the children being safe. We give our best efforts trying to protect them and in their childhood, we even get child safety seats to protect them from injury. We also think so much about our safety. We make sure that the car is equipped with a safety harness. In many jobs and activities, we ensure our safety.

But what can protect us from monsters like the killers of those poor and helpless victims in the Maguindanao massacre? What can protect anyone from the evil schemes of those executioners? What can guard us from the beastly machinery of conspirators who assume that they are untouchable ‘pigs’?

THE FILIPINO PEOPLE CONDEMN THE SAVAGERY THAT HAPPENED IN MAGUINDANAO! LET JUSTICE BE SERVED QUICK! PRESIDENT GLORIA ARROYO, DO SOMETHING FOR JUSTICE TO BE SERVED FOR THOSE INNOCENT VICTIMS. PERHAPS DOING SOMETHING FOR THEM FAST AND WITHOUT PREJUDICE CAN UNDO SOMEHOW THE MANY SHORTCOMINGS YOU HAVE FOR THE COUNTRY.
